Why Edelweiss?

✨ Where the name came from and the deeper personal meaning ✨

I grew up surrounded by Edelweiss flowers around the house and stories about my family hiking to high peaks to find it. From an early age I developed deep respect, love and fascination for Edelweiss. My great-grand father passed this love to my mum and I was wondering for years why the Edelweiss flower particularly. Knowing he was Slovenian being in the Austro-Hungarian Army and that he nurtured a love for hiking across the Alps and the Slovenian mountains, there is no wonder why Edelweiss became so meaningful, especially after surviving Germany’s Second World War concentration camp. He was captured for 4 years but survived.
Later, I grew up with going to sleep with the beautiful Edelweiss song sang by my mother which was written in 1959 by Richard Rodgers for the Sound of Music. The movie came out at 1965 starring the amazing Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer where this particular song is sang twice and represented something that I find it close to heart and the connections to my, at that time late great-grand father I never met. It is the same song I sing to my daughters. Also, the second name for Edelweiss is Silver Star, which you will find as the name of the town in the book, where our characters live. It is a protected flower and I have been using it a symbol of purity, rare appearances for which you need to work hard to get to see them, as a symbol of freedom and learning about accepting differences and that we are all equal. The book promotes high values I fight for and what I believe many in our history died for. Edelweiss for me is a symbol of my family, our struggles and becoming who we are today.
